Many video games have led to aspiring developers create their own. But it's rare to have an original work picked up by the company behind the original game.
However, this was the case for Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team from Australian developer Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle has been published by Jagex, the creator of RuneScape, a title which was the primary inspiration behind his own initiative.
Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of RuneScape as well as other MMOs and distills it down into a simple idle-type game which lets players manage their abilities, inventory and quests. Participating in combat battles with a winning streak earns players XP as well as loot, which can be put into any improvement tree or skill tree players wish to purchase, while repeating tasks like crafting or cutting wood has their own rewards.
Malcolm has played RuneScape since childhood as well as dabbled in several of the most popular idle games such as Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. While he was a fan but felt that it could be doing something more that would be pleasing in a similar manner to Jagex's top RPG.
"So, I decided to make my own, never really imagining it would be published, let alone be so well-known," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I tried to design something completely different from the existing idle game mould and something that had Buy RuneScape golda lot of features and offered players a real choice in how they wanted to progress instead of simply increasing numbers in a continuous cycle.
