Square Enix's HD-2D-themed games have gotten a lot of positive reviews from players. Some titles such as Octopath traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of nostalgic gamers partly because of their distinctive style of art.
In a recent conversation with 4Gamer (translated through Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano discussed the design style and how it's used in future games for the company. The interviewer was shocked that more indie games haven't taken on the same design, Asano revealed the reason the reason is because it's expensive!
"It's most likely worth noting that it costs more than you'd think. It's the perfect match for the titles that come out of Square Enix. There's not much to gain from other companies stealing it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately this isn't stopping Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.
Remakes of Live a Live is set to be exclusive to Nintendo Switch in July, as a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently being worked on. There are many other games that could benefit from the look, and it'll be interesting to discover exactly what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has certainly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to reveal that there is no currently a "definitive book," and it will be evolving from game to game.
