Back in the month of April Blizzard ended the pirate World of Warcraft server that showcased the MMO's early days before it received any expansions. Blizzard had a meeting with
WOTLK Gold the Nostalrius team responsible for Nostalrius recently, and we know what the two talked about and where Blizzard has a position on the issue of legacy servers.
"After this meeting, we can affirm that the guys want to keep traditional WoW servers, that's for sure," said project manager Viper on the Nostalrius forums. "We did everything we could to make this presentation & discussion as professional as it could be this clearly was a pleasant unexpected delight for the entire Blizzard team, including CEO Mike Morhaime was among them."
The event was scheduled to last under two hours but it ended up going for more than five hours. Viper states she was Blizzard was "very engaged, interested, [and] attuned." Those in attendance included Morhaime, director of production J. Allen Brack, and game director Tom Chilton. Viper adds that the Nostalrius team was "very surprised about the deep admiration and respect they all felt for" the legacy server work they'd done.
The conversations that took place included the pirate server's history and the method of its creation and other technical information similar to the anti-cheat program the team developed for Nostalrius. However, no information related to bringing the official legacy servers to existence was confirmed.
"First of all, you must not overlook the fact that in a big company the decision-making process is not made during a single meeting. They have the right to announce any formal yes or no them-self," Viper wrote. They added that Blizzard does have the source code for "Vanilla WoW," and it will require "tremendous effort" to get up and running.
"In conjunction with the technical aspects of releasing a server that is older, Blizzard should also be able to deliver an extremely refined game that is accessible to their millions players. This is something that existing unofficial legacy servers can't provide," Viper wrote. You can read about the technical work needs to
